  • McLane Company, Inc. is one of the largest supply chain services leaders, providing grocery and foodservice supply chain solutions for convenience stores, mass merchants, drug stores and chain restaurants throughout the United States.     Challenge

    Unitech was approached by McLane to help them find a reliable handheld device to run their new software application for their convenience store customers. This software application enables their customers to maintain better inventory practices by improving order accuracy with a user-friendly system. The combination of this new software and a reliable hardware device would ultimately improve their customers’ overall profitability.

    The portable device was required to have an Android operating system, integrated barcode scanner, powerful processor and sufficient memory to run the software application quickly and efficiently. The portable also needed the ability to communicate with a modem, or wireless access point, to electronically send and receive ordering information.


    Solution

    Numerous portable terminals from several manufacturers were tested. These portable devices were evaluated internally, and also sent to customers to assess the portables’ ergonomics and ease-of-use. After careful consideration of all the feedback, both internal and from their customers, the Unitech PA700 portable was deemed the best fit for their application.

    In addition to the PA700’s functionality, Unitech was also selected for their performance as a business partner. “We realized that we asked a lot of Unitech to get this project done so quickly, and that many people in the company put in extra time to make it happen.
